The NSS unit of Bunts Sangha’s S.M. Shetty College of Science, Commerce & Management Studies has completed eight successful years since its conception in 2009-2010. NSS volunteers generally work at villages, slums and voluntary agencies to complete 120 hours of regular activities during an academic year. As per the fundamental principles of National Service Scheme, a volunteer is expected to remain in constant touch with the community. Hence, it is of vital importance that a particular village/slum is selected for implementation of NSS programmes. As the NSS volunteer is to live with the members of the community and learn from their experience during his/her tenure in NSS, the village/slum should be carefully selected for adoption by NSS unit.

Each year NSS unit of college accomplishes various activities. The major activities include Blood Donation Camp, Premdaan and Residential Camp. The Blood donation camp had been successfully organized in collaboration with J. J. Hospital Blood Bank for past six years. To make it successful, volunteers of the unit perform skits and plays and spread the message to numerous people about the benefits of blood donation. The residential camp of NSS unit is taken to various underdeveloped places adopted by college where volunteers get opportunity to study the lifestyle of residents along with difficulties faced by them in daily life. There volunteers also do shramdaan by performing activities like construction of road, dam etc. for benefits of native people. Till date unit has visited Maswan, Chiplun and Karmale villages for residential camps. In these areas students participate in various activities like Swachata Abhiyan, Socio-economic Survey of Adivasi people, Donation of clothes and stationary material, making of kitchen garden, Dengue and Malaria detection camps etc. Workshops and Exhibitions of Varli artifacts are held for students. In Premdaan students visit NGOs and spend time with its inhabitants to spread the message of love and care among them.

This year NSS unit organized a variety of activities including Peace Rally, Vyasan Mukti Rally, Paper Bag Making, campaign against Nuclear weapons, Independence Day rally, Traffic week, Bhajan Sandhya etc. The NSS unit of college adopted Vikhroli Railway Station under Swacha Bharat Abhiyan Act and cleaned 4 platforms as well as the surrounding area under the guidance of Principal and Vice principal.
